Robust Materiality Assessment
Amcor Limited, a global leader in responsible packaging, supplies a broad range of rigid and flexible packaging products for the food, beverage, healthcare, home, and personal care and tobacco industries. A publicly-traded Australian company, Amcor employs more than 35,000 people worldwide, operating in 40-plus countries across 200 sites.
Amcor conducts materiality assessments annually, following a more robust process every three years. In 2017, Amcor selected BrownFlynn to lead the company through a materiality analysis. After completing desktop research and benchmarking, BrownFlynn conducted two impact mapping sessions via videoconference with Amcor subject matter experts (SMEs) in Europe and Asia. More than 25 stakeholder interviews with Amcor’s internal SMEs, customers, suppliers, industry associations, NGOs, and other stakeholders—supplemented by additional sources of input—provided the evidence needed to prioritize the most significant sustainability topics. BrownFlynn led a workshop with key leaders in the organization to validate the materiality assessment findings.
Upon completion of the materiality assessment, Amcor used the results to refine its sustainability strategy and inform the company’s annual sustainability report.
