It is with great pleasure that we invite you to read our 2013–2014 sustainability report, entitled Sightline to Sustainable Impact. During this reporting period, BrownFlynn’s sightline changed—both literally and figuratively.
In June 2014, we relocated our offices to the 36th floor of downtown Cleveland’s iconic Terminal Tower. Our new vantage point offers a 360-degree view of our beloved headquarter city. These sightlines tell a story in and of themselves. We see…
….remnants of the industrial era from nearby steel mills’ smoke stacks
….bright neon signs and the world’s largest permanent outdoor chandelier showcasing Cleveland’s growing entertainment districts
….the blue waters of Lake Erie dotted with pleasure boats while fighting off invasive species
….the muddy and crooked waters of the Cuyahoga River, once polluted, now a place where walleye live and residents row
… outside our front door, the people of Cleveland reclaiming our Public Square where we are closing streets and turning concrete into greenspace—Cleveland’s version of Central Park.
Olympian Kristin Armstrong once said, “It’s not only moving that creates new starting points. Sometimes all it takes is a subtle shift in perspective, an opening of the mind, an intentional pause and reset, or a new route to start to see new options and new possibilities.”
Our new “physical” sightline spurred our Firm’s collective imagination, providing us the backdrop to open our eyes, hearts, and minds to consider BrownFlynn’s very purpose. We asked ourselves, how do we differentiate ourselves in an expanding market where we compete with global consultancies? How can we attract top talent and expand geographically to better serve our clients? What do we aspire to be to the world and how does our daily work contribute to that vision? Through a collaborative process with our team, our vision and mission now state:
BrownFlynn aspires to create a world where all companies operate in a manner that enables current and future generations to thrive.
BrownFlynn partners with our clients to achieve positive and tangible social, environmental, and economic impact—leading to sustained value.
To authentically fulfill our mission and achieve our vision, we must “walk the talk.” Yes, we have a great opportunity to positively affect the world through our client work, but it is critical that we live the values we espouse and demonstrate the ways BrownFlynn can take action that leads to sustained value.
During this reporting period, BrownFlynn experienced a great deal of organizational change. Some valued team members left the firm, while we hired others who added sustainability expertise and new capabilities that strengthen us as an organization. To develop our most important asset, our people, we revamped our employee orientation program and created an internal mentoring program. Learn more in the Sightline to Sustainable People section.
As consumers and companies increasingly focus on their environmental and social impacts, we have deepened our service offerings and are better equipped to help our clients make meaningful strides in sustainability. BrownFlynn is actively developing strategic partnerships to enable companies to identify and track sustainability risks and opportunities—both within their organizations and throughout their value chains. BrownFlynn also is expanding our sustainability reporting expertise in anticipation of increased integrated reporting.
Within this report, you will learn about our efforts to align and embed our sustainability efforts with our strategic purpose. We took our own advice. We engaged our internal and external stakeholders. We looked across our value chain to uncover areas of risk and opportunity. We conducted a materiality assessment. We are aligning our most material impacts with the firm’s strategic dashboard and holding people accountable to positive outcomes.
We are extremely proud of the progress we have made over the past few years. With our new sightline, we look forward to making even greater sustainable impact in the future!
